Fellowships

Fellowships are awards that typically require no service. Most fellowships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and potential for scholarship. The following awards are offered through the Graduate School:

Fellowship deadlines have passed for the 2008–2009 academic year. Applications and information for the 2009–2010 competition will be available in JANUARY 2009.



  • 2008 Graduate Diversity Enhancement Fellowships - The University of Tennessee, Knoxville Graduate School is accepting applications for a graduate fellowship designed to promote the educational and related benefits of a diverse graduate student body. This fellowship will provide financial support to first-time enrolled graduate students demonstrating significant potential to contribute to the educational mission of the Graduate School by presenting one or more of a wide range of diverse attributes. The Graduate School seeks to recruit, enroll, and retain qualified students who will benefit from educational and social interactions with peers who come from different backgrounds and who have different life experiences, perspectives, and goals. The Fellowship Application deadline is February 25, 2008.
  • 2008 Lori Mayer Re-Entry Women's Graduate Fellowships - open to entering graduate women students who are U.S. citizens, 27 years of age or older, and who have been out of a formal educational program for at least five years. Awards $7,000 stipend for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. Requires admission to degree program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and to the Graduate School no later than April 16, 2008. The Fellowship Application deadline is February 25, 2008.
  • 2008 Bruce Painter and Eva Woody Seaton Memorial Graduate Fellowships - open to graduate applicants who demonstrate successful academic and professional performance. Only students in their first semester of graduate work as degree-seeking students are eligible. The award will provide a $5,000 stipend, paid over 10 months during Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 for full-time study in a graduate program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Requires admission into degree program and to the Graduate School. The Fellowship Application deadline is February 25, 2008.
  • 2008 Yates Dissertation Fellowships - open to University of Tennessee, Knoxville graduate students in good standing who will have completed admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree and will have reached dissertation stage prior to Fall 2008. Awards of $15,000 paid in monthly installments from August 2008 through May 2009. The Fellowship Application deadline is February 25, 2008.
  • 2008 J. Wallace & Katie Dean Graduate Fellowships - To be eligible, the applicant must be a first-time enrollee in Fall 2008 in a graduate degree program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Awards will be made to selected students who are nominated by academic departments* offering graduate programs. Nominees must be fully admitted (Fall 2008) graduate students who will be engaged in full-time graduate study at UTK. Stipend of $15,000. Applications are only available through academic departments*. Students must return the completed fellowship application materials to the Graduate Program Director in the academic department* no later than February 25, 2008. Awardees must be admitted to graduate program prior to April 16, 2008 to be eligible for nomination.
  • 2008 Herman E. Spivey Graduate Fellowships - To be eligible, the applicant must be a first-time enrollee in Fall 2008 in a graduate degree program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Awards will be made to selected students who are nominated by academic departments* offering programs in humanities, including Art, English, Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Music, Philosophy, and Theatre. Nominees must be fully admitted (Fall 2008) graduate students who will be engaged in full-time graduate study at UTK. Stipend of $15,000. Awarded on merit. Applications are only available through academic departments*. Students must return the completed fellowship application materials to the Graduate Program Director in the academic department* no later than February 25, 2008. Awardees must be admitted to graduate program prior to April 16, 2008 to be eligible for nomination.

* Departments may retrieve applications for the 2008 J. Wallace & Katie Dean Graduate Fellowships and 2008 Herman E. Spivey Graduate Fellowships through the Graduate School Blackboard site. Graduate Program Director will choose nominee and submit all required materials to the Graduate School by March 7, 2008. Departments must provide a graduate assistantship (GA, GTA, or GRA) of at least 25% FTE for nominee of Dean and Spivey fellowships. For questions, contact gradschool@utk.edu.

  1. How to download forms
    To view an interactive PDF form, you must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may download it by clicking on the yellow button below. After installing it, click the interactive form in the list that you want to view. If you are unable to open the file by clicking the link on this page, you may right-click on the file and save it to your computer desktop. You may then minimize all open windows, and double-click the file on your desktop to open it.
  2. How to complete forms online
    To complete the forms, point your mouse to area that you want to fill in and click. To fill in a box, use the mouse and click. You may move forward through the form with the TAB key, or backwards with the SHIFT + TAB key.
  3. How to print forms
    Once you have completed all items online, you are ready to print out a final copy. You can not save the completed version. Be sure to print out a copy while still online. Applications cannot be submitted electronically.
